Colors to brighten dark room? ?

I have cedar walls in my home. My husband refuses to paint them but they make the rooms drab and bland. We also have a sage green carpet throughout (not my choice) that I'm stuck with for a while. Any suggestions as to what colors I should use to brighten things up a bit?
